Mars set to swallow Wrigley?

Confectionery giant Mars is closing in on a deal to buy chewing gum manufacturer Wrigley for more than $22bn, according to reports from the US press this morning.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal both said the deal could be announced as early as today.

Mars is thought to have backing from billionaire financier Warren Buffet.

The deal could spark further consolidation in the global confectionery industry.
