Morrisons consolidates market share gains
Morrisons has recorded its third successive period of 11% sales growth, according to the latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures.
As a result, Morrisons holds on to its record 11.6% share. The figures for the 12 weeks to 23 March 2008 show Asda again outperforming the market, lifting its share to 17.1% from 16.9% a year ago. Tesco and Sainsbury's both posted respectable growth rates yet suffered small share losses. Somerfield, which is currently up for sale, showed a small share loss. But its sales moved back into positive territory with 4% year-on-year growth. Both ends of the price spectrum fared well, with strong performances from Waitrose at the same time as Iceland, Aldi, Lidl and Netto. The early Easter also contributed to growth, as the comparable period last year did not include Easter. Video commentary from Ed Garner of TNS:
