Scots c-store retailers concerned at Budget
Scottish convenience store retailers have expressed their concerns over the increased taxation on alcohol announced in today's Budget. John Drummond, chief executive of the Scottish Grocers Federation (SGF), said: Our members have very real concerns over the Chancellors budget announcement. It is the responsible drinker and small retailer who will suffer as a result of the increase in the duty on alcohol. These measures will do nothing to improve the problems caused by the misuse of alcohol. Meanwhile the increase in duty on tobacco will be a further reason for some smokers to turn to the black market. With regard to reducing the use of plastic carrier bags, SGF has support the Government in its targets to reduce the use of plastic bags via a joint voluntary initiative. Our members are committed to addressing this issue and will continue to actively reduce bag use. It is to be hoped that the targets set can be reached without the need to introduce a levy.
