The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) has welcomed a new initiative to tackle under-age drinking in Scotland but is worried that the scheme does not go far enough.
The initiative was announced today by Scots justice secretary Kenny MacAskill.
NFRN national president Colin Finch said: “Any drive that deals with the problem of underage drinking is welcome but we don’t think this one goes far enough.
“NFRN members, who are all local and independent retailers, feel the effects that underage alcohol consumption has for the community.
“Yet we can’t fail to notice that this is yet another scheme that does not tackle the problem from all sides. The real solution does not lie exclusively with buying alcohol. At some point we will need to ask the real question: Why do teenagers attempt to buy alcohol?”
The scheme will see police deploy 16-year-old volunteers to attempt to buy alcohol in licensed premises across Scotland.
It will allow police to target action against premises they believe are selling alcohol to under age people.
