Carp making a splash on Christmas menus, claims Waitrose
Carp, a dish traditionally served in Poland and Eastern Europe at Christmas, is outstripping salmon as Britain's favourite festive fish dish, according to Waitrose. Last year saw sales increases of more than 50% year-on-year and the supermarket group is expecting similar growth this Christmas. Carp forms part of the Christmas Eve meal known as Wigilia in Poland. As Christmas Eve is part of advent historically a time of fasting tradition dictated that no meat could be consumed. While the dish is still proving popular among Polish communities in the UK, Waitrose fish buyer Jeremy Langley predicts that it could become a more mainstream addition to consumers' shopping baskets over the next decade, as it is both sustainable and low in fat. Waitrose carp are reared in large earth ponds in France and the fish retails at £5.99 per kilo.
