Shoppers have backed calls for an end to free plastic bags being handed out by retailers, according to The Independent.

The newspaper reported on Saturday that 61% of people surveyed by the British Market Research Bureau approved of shops charging for bags, compared with 20% who said it was a bad idea.

And in a separate survey by AC Nielsen, 84% of people said they would not switch to a rival supermarket if their grocer removed free shopping bags.
