Mars labelling move falls short, says Vegetarian Society
The Vegetarian Society has welcomed the announcement by confectionery giant Mars that it is to add a “suitable for vegetarians” label to its range of chocolates.
But the society said that while this was a positive step, it was disappointed that due to the use of battery eggs in Mars bars, parent company Masterfoods was unable to proceed with official Vegetarian Society accreditation.
On of the criteria for approval for the societys seedling symbol is that any eggs used in a product must be free range.
Vegetarian Society chief executive Annette Pinner said: We are pleased that Masterfoods has recognised the importance of labelling to its vegetarian customers and are happy to remain in dialogue with the manufacturer.
