Tesco rival told to put up or shut up over Dobbies bid
The Takeover Panel has told Scottish entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter that he must make a decision on whether or not to make a bid for Dobbies garden centres by 5.00pm on Thursday. If he decides not to proceed, he will be banned from making another move on the company for six months. Hunter said on 14 June that he was considering a possible offer for Dobbies. Less than a week earlier, Tesco had tabled a £155.6m bid for the 21-strong chain. That bid has been recommended to shareholders by the Dobbies board and cleared by the Office of Fair Trading. Shareholders have until tomorrow to decide whether to accept Tesco's offer.
