As reported by Talking Retail yesterday, Sir Tom, who owns rival garden centre chain Wyevale, increased his stake in Dobbies from 20% to 26% fuelling further rumours that he is likely to table a counter bid soon.

However, Tesco tabled a 1,500p a share bid for Dobbies last month and yesterday extended its offer to August 8 having gained acceptance from a fraction of shareholders.

Tesco revealed it had persuaded independent shareholders holding only 1.4% to accept its offer.
