Whole Foods Market the most ethical supermarket
Whole Foods Market - which opened its first UK store in London on Wednesday - is ranked as more ethical than mainstream grocery multiples such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's. That's according to "alternative consumer organisation" Ethical Consumer, which scores Whole Foods Market 7.5 out of 20 on its Ethiscore rating system. Sainsbury's scores only 1 out of 20, Asda 0.5, and Tesco gets a zero rating. Ethical Consumer researcher Mary Rayner said: "It will be interesting to see whether Whole Foods' popularity in the US replicates over here. "If so, then it will put pressure on other supermarkets to improve their ethics." Among home-grown retailers, Ethical Consumer recommends Marks & Spencer (6.5), the Co-op (6) and Waitrose (4).
