Sainsbury's prints till receipts on both sides to save paper
Sainsbury's has become the first European retailer to install double-sided receipt printers on its supermarket checkouts.
Reducing the amount of paper used is not the only potential environmental benefit. With about 45% less paper needed, there could also be cuts in:
electricity
water
fuel
If rolled out across Sainsbury's entire estate, the new printers could save about 90 million metres of receipt paper each year (enough to go around the world three times).
Following a successful trial of 25 of the printers in its Maidenhead store, Sainsbury's has decided to install the machines in all its new supermarkets.
The new machines also print faster, and the rolls need changing less often, thus reducing checkout queuing times, says manufacturer NCR.
Are you an environmentally friendly retailer? If so, you should be entering the new Environmental Retailer of the Year category in this year's Retail Industry Awards. But send in your nominations soon - closing date is 15 June
