BRC campaigns for carbon-neutral tax incentives

Chariman of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), Sir Geoff Mulcahy, is calling for the Government to give retailers incentives, in the form of lower tax and duty bands, to invest in environmentally-friendly policies and technologies.

Mulcahy, who will share the BRC's message with government officials and business people at the organisation's Annual Parliamentary Reception on Wednesday 16 May 2007, believes the Government must make it easier for retailers to comply with carbon-saving targets.

The BRC wants the Government to do the following:

1. Ensure retailers investing in renewable technologies are not penalised with increased rates liability
2. Consider the energy efficiency of buildings when assessing their rateable value
3. Give tax relief to retailers using the most 'energy efficient; buildings
4. Freeze the rate of gas oil duty paid by the rail freight sector
5. Reduce VAT to 5% on all energy efficient products
6. Campaign to the EU for removal of VAT on all energy efficient products

The reception will focus on 'Sustainability in Today's Retail Environment'.

Also speaking at the event will be Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Ian Pearson.

Is the BRC carbon tax incentives likely to extend to carbon miles? And would it be possible to assess the relative "carbon spend" of food miles vs. e.g. other sectors including annual holidays? My concern is the devastating effect on small-scale producers in third countries.
