SIX major tobacco companies have launched an appeal against new restrictions on the amount of point-of-sale retailers can display in-store.
The firms, including Gallaher and Imperial Tobacco, have applied to the High Court for a review of the regulations, which will restrict retailers to one A5-sized display from December 2004.
They claim that the regulations prevent any form of meaningful or effective communication with adult smokers.
Tim Lord, chief executive of the Tobacco Manufacturers Association, claimed the regulations were "disproportionate and illegal".
"They contain unreasonable restrictions on providing information at the point of sale and will inhibit competition," he said.
