New campaign from Sainsbury's encourages shoppers to be kinder to the environment

Sainsbury's has announced its first Make the Difference day, scheduled for Friday 27 April 2007. Sainsbury's new campaign is designed to 'encourage positive action and change across a range of environmental and ethical issues,' according to the retailer.

Disposable plastic carrier bags will be taken off checkouts in Sainsbury's stores on 27 April. Instead shoppers will receive a free 'Bag for Life' with their shopping. The retailer estimates it will give away at least seven million free bags.

Gwyn Burr, Sainsbury's customer director, said: "Our customers are showing an increasing interest in wanting to be 'greener' or healthier, but tell us they would like more information and help on what they can do and ideas on specific positive steps they can take.

"That's why Sainsbury's is launching 'Make the Difference' days to champion specific issues to help and encourage customers and colleagues to take simple steps and actions to effect real change.

"On the first day we will provide the bags for free but need customers to re-use them to really make the difference."

Sainsbury's Bags for Life usually cost customers 10p. They are made from 100% recycled material. According to the retailer, customers use the bags at least 20 times on average, saving an estimated 90 million disposable bags a year.

Proceeds from sales of the bags are donated to communities and charities.

Why is Sainsbury's not making this offer available to online orders for home delivery? I get far more bags from a delivery than I do when I pack my shopping in-store.

Sainsbury's are not making this offer available to on-line shoppers because it is unlikely they will re-use the bags. Your delivery driver can take away your used carrier bags to be recycled.
