Waitrose announces target to double Fairtrade sales
Waitrose plans to double sales of Fairtrade products over the next year At the start of Fairtrade Fortnight (26 February to March 11) Waitrose has outlined its commitment to increase Fairtrade sales by 100% by the close of the current financial year. This accelerated growth will be delivered by making Fairtrade options available for a number of core shopping basket lines. This week Waitrose claims it is the first UK supermarket to switch all its banana lines to Fairtrade. The retailer will also launch the largest range of Fairtrade roses of any supermarket on the high street, with the aim of ensuring that 100% of all rose bunches sold in its shops are Fairtrade marked. Steven Esom, Waitrose managing director, said: Customers are increasingly thinking about the origins of the food they buy and the Fairtrade mark is a widely recognised way of ensuring that communities in the developing world are getting a fair deal. We are confident that our Fairtrade sales will double within the next financial year, as ethical spending becomes a mainstream consideration on customers shopping lists. Waitrose also launched own label Fairtrade coffee and own label Fairtrade chocolate in November.
