Asda weighs up manufacturing shift

Tuesday, 02 September 2008
Asda has said that it may move some manufacturing operations away from China because it is becoming too expensive.

Chief executive at the supermarket Andy Bond revealed to the Sunday Telegraph that Asda could make a move into Vietnam, where it is possible to run at a lower cost.

A number of factors have pushed prices up in China over recent times such as higher commodities and growing wage inflation.

"In common with other retailers we are always looking to where we source from, and Vietnam is one of the countries we are looking to," bond told the paper.

This week, Asda was named as having the fastest website in terms of respponse times by Gomez, the web application experience management company.
