Lidl came out as the cheapest supermarket after a recent survey carried out by Which? magazine.
In a price comparison of a typical shopping basket, the publication found that Aldi was 3% more expensive, while Tesco was 21% more expensive than Lidl.
Aldi's items were cheaper on five occasions, Lidl on three and two of Tesco's products were the cheapest (out of 15).
But Tesco performed better in terms of the percentage of the most important ingredient in some of the studied items.
Its meat balls had a meat content of 86%, while this figure was 81% at Aldi and only 61% at Lidl.
Yet members told the magazine that products at Aldi are good quality despite the layout of stores.
"The shopping experience is dire, but you get excellent quality at low prices," one told Which?
Mike Allen from Aylesbury added that he likes to save in any manner that he can and was "surprised" by the quality of food at Lidl.
