Sainsbury’s is to shut down its specialist wine ordering website www.sainsburyswine.co.uk.
The retailer said in a statement that the closure came following a review of the service, but that it would continue to offer “a full range of wines and champagnes on our online grocery website.”
The site launched in 2001 and offers specialist wines and champagnes by the case. But Sainsbury’s said: “The vast majority of our online customers purchase wine and champagne, either by the bottle or by the case, from our grocery website.” It added that it had been increasing the number of specialist wines in its core range in store and on the grocery website “to offer our customers a full choice”. The final date for customer orders is 31 July 2008. Sainsbury announced earlier this year it planned to launch an online non-food offer in the first half of 2010.
