Solvent hints for retailers


In response to figures released by St George’s University that said that number of deaths associated with Volatile Substance Misuse have risen, charity Frank has released some hints for retailers.

Here are the products they have been urged to be aware of:

• Butane gas cigarette lighter refills
• Liquefied domestic gas
• Solvent based adhesives
• Deodorant aerosols
• Pain relief sprays
• Aerosol air fresheners
• Hairspray
• Other aerosols
• Some typewriter correction fluids
• Petrol
• Certain paints, paint thinners & removers
• Dry cleaning agents
• Petrol lighter fuel
• Nail varnish & varnish remover
• Halon (BCF) fire extinguishers (no longer manufactured)
• Some shoe & metal polish
• Plaster remover

And here are the signs they have been asked to look out for in those misusing:

• The smell of glue or solvents on clothes
• Slurred speech and behaviour similar to drunkenness
• Spots and sores around the mouth and nose
• The frequent or bulk purchase of solvents by a customer
• Buying solvents and plastic bags at the same time
