Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s join Brita recycling scheme

Friday, 30 May 2008
To coincide with WRAP’s (Waste & Resources Action Programme) Recycling Week, Brita, the UK’s leading water filter company, has announced Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s as the latest major retailers to sign-up to their recently launched filter cartridge recycling scheme.

From 2 June 2008, Brita’s blue permanent recycling bins can be found at the trolley ‘drop before they shop’ at 157 Tesco stores across the UK.

The Brita recycling bins will also appear at selected Waitrose and Sainsbury’s from July.

To make it even easier for customers to recycle their cartridges, Brita has set-up in-store recycling schemes with some of the UK’s biggest retailers including: Argos, John Lewis, Robert Dyas and many independent stores.

Customers simply need to visit www.brita.co.uk/recycle and enter their postcode into the store locator to find their nearest participating retailers.

Customers can simply bring their used Brita cartridges, which are 100% recyclable, to the store and drop them off for recycling while they purchase new cartridges for their Brita jugs or taps. The cartridges are separated into their component parts and recycled, ensuring a traceable, renewable life cycle.

Brita is at the forefront of water filter innovation and has most recently launched the Maxtra – its best ever performing cartridge with improved limescale and chlorine reduction.

Just one cartridge can produce up to 150 litres of filtered water for great taste with less waste –– and all at just 4p per litre.

As the first individual brand to launch an in-store recycling initiative, Brita hopes to help the millions of UK households already enjoying the benefits of filtered water to further reduce waste and raise awareness of filtered water as a great value, ethical solution for consumers who want drinking water, but with a smaller carbon footprint.

Neal Jones, Brita Marketing Director, commented: “Brita is the only water filter company to recycle its cartridges and we’ve been doing it since 1992. Every one of our cartridges is 100% recyclable, and this new initiative is the next step towards reducing our impact on the planet. Our recycling scheme provides a simpler route for consumers to return their cartridges to us for recycling. The millions of cartridges returned will reduce waste and conserve raw materials and natural resources.”
