On 19 March Capper & Co opened the doors to its modernised Spar store in Rhiwbina, South Wales. This is the second store to open in Spar UK's “Stores Of The Future” programme.

The Rhiwbina store was re-launched after an extensive refit programme. Displaying a variety of new and exciting concepts, Rhiwbina is Spar UK's Neighbourhood Affluent flagship store and is the first “Store of the Future” in the Red Dragon Guild.

As well as its striking imagery, Spar Rhiwbina features the famous Canadian Tim Horton's self serve coffee and an enhanced self serve new food to go operation featuring the latest …TO GO imagery.

The space allocated to fresh foods has been increased by 30% and the store has been laid out in the “shopping mission” style, where the zones facilitate an easier shopping experience.

Local, regional and speciality products feature heavily in the store in the bakery, fresh meat, fresh deli, grocery and alcohol sections. The off licence hosts a range of locally supplied wines in the Ballantynes range; and has a dedicated fixture for locally brewed ales.

There are added details about the local micro breweries and tasting notes to aid customer choice. Another new local range is in the produce section aimed at children, where the store features snacking fruit packs, uniquely offering one portion of the 5 a day in a convenient fresh pack.

There are also locally grown organic vegetables prominently displayed at the front of the store.

The total range in the store has been dramatically modernised and made more contemporary with over 600 new lines. Another new idea in the store is the creation of a gifting zone which consists of cards, boxed chocolates, gift wrap and accessories.

Early indications are very encouraging with total sales increasing by over 50%. Chilled foods are showing a 40% increase, fruit and veg is up 100% and food to go has grown almost three fold.

Bill Capper, Chairman, and Robert Upton, Managing Director, opened the store and were assisted by four first team players from Glamorgan County Cricket Club including ex England star Robert Croft.

On opening the store, Robert Upton, Managing Director said: “We want our customers to feel confident that Spar can and does provide them with a local solution that is just right for them. Spar Rhiwbina represents a major investment by Capper & Co. We are proud that the 'stores of the future' programme demonstrates how Spar remains the true innovator in neighbourhood shopping.”
