Next generation screwcaps for wine unveiled

Read more about

The next stage in the development of screwcaps in the wine industry will be unveiled in London next month (May) in a bid to make the closures more acceptable to consumers of mid-priced and premium wines.

Guala's WAK

The Italy-based Guala Closures Group claims its WAK closure combines “a traditional look with the technology and benefits of a screwcap”.

Created for standard 750ml wine bottles, the WAK’s closure is not visible externally, as is the case with most screwcaps on the market, because it is contained within a long aluminium shell.

Franco Cocchiara, the global wine co-ordinator at Guala, said: “The trade is now persuaded by the advantages of screwcaps, but many consumers remain to be convinced. The WAK combines the appearance of a traditional closure with the benefits of a screwcap – and we believe this will help overcome any consumer reticence.”

The closure will be revealed to the UK wine trade at next month’s London International Wine Fair at the ExCel exhibition centre.

So it looks better, uses more material, emits more carbon, but does nothing further to protect the wine. Looks like we may have another example of a heavy bottle here. Lets get back to selling wine because the wine is good and not because the packaging is excessive.

Yes it looks better. You correct! The screwcap manufacturing process is a lengthy process, with material usage of coatings and inks, varnishes, liner etc.Its riding a wave.Think the next 2years is critical.Carbon and multi material usage of the screwcap are going be the biggest factors.Just how much are the wineries prepared to pay for a screwcap.I THINK THERE IS A BIG SHOCK COMING.Everyone is pushing the direction. We losing the basics, its about the wine, the consumer and margins.
