Study claims organic food healthier for you
Organic food has been found to be more nutritious and healthier for consumers than ordinary produce, according to a new four-year study. A project by Newcastle University has revealed that organic fruit and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants than non-organic varieties, which could cut the risk of cancer and heart disease. Researchers on the Quality Low Input Food project grew fruit and vegetables and also reared cattle on a farm in Northumberland. Both organic as well as normal crops were grown and then their nutritional quality evaluated. The scientists found that antioxidant levels in organic milk were up to 90% higher than in conventional milk. The findings contradict advice from the Food Standards Agency, which maintains there is no scientific evidence to suggest organic food is healthier. The FSA has confirmed it will now be reviewing the evidence and considering whether to change its advice.
