Newly enlarged food manufacturing company, Glendale Foods, formed through the merger of Glendale Frozen Foods with specialist sausage producer Supreme Foods, has announced the acquisition of the award-winning Great British Pudding Company, the Northampton-based savoury and sweet puddings business.

The purchase of all brand marketing and manufacturing rights adds an immediate uplift in annual sales, with further growth envisaged through diversification into the chip shop and chilled foods sectors and trading in European export markets.

Glendale already manufactured the puddings under licence at its Cobden Street, Salford plant, so the product consistency, quality ingredients and home-cooked appearance that made the brand such as success in the foodservice sector, will all be retained under the new ownership.

“It represents a key brand extension to our existing product portfolio, strengthening our overall offering to the foodservice sector, particularly pubs, clubs, small hotels and restaurants, and introduces plenty of opportunities for new product development and market growth,” says Glendale MD, Paul Burkitt. “Baked suet puddings like ours can be microwaved from frozen in around five minutes and make for mouthwatering centre-of-the-plate products that are ideal for portion control and generate virtually guaranteed repeat sales.”

Steak & Kidney pudding, a best seller in the Great British Pudding range, was described by The New York Times as a ‘quintessentially English dish’, served, it says, ‘on dinner tables, at gentlemen’s clubs and in your local public house’.

First featured in Mrs Beeton’s classic Book of Household Management in 1861, it has remained a staple of British menus ever since and has recently enjoyed a renaissance in upscale restaurants, as part of a retro meals trend.

Winner of the Ready Meal, Main Course category of the Excellence in Food & Drink Awards, GBPC’s equally authentic Steak, Mushroom & Ale pudding was praised for its ‘chunks of steak in a rich ale and mushroom gravy encased in suet pastry’, which ‘the judges couldn’t fault’.

Thanks to a baked, rather than steamed, finish, Great British Puddings have an excellent visual presentation and the largest 370g puddings give generous plate coverage, with smaller 250g, 190g and 150g sizes extending the menu options.

The suet pastry case totally envelops the filling and provides a better ingredients carrier than pastry-topped pies, as well as more convenient portion control, either as a main meal centrepiece or filling snack. Supplied individually quick frozen, to lock in all the flavour, texture and nutritional goodness, the puddings can be simply microwaved direct from the freezer or reheated in a conventional oven.

As well as traditional steak-based fillings, a range of innovative savoury and sweet varieties allows caterers to offer a tasty menu choice, while small case sizes of eight or a dozen puddings mean less money needs to be tied up in stock.

Savoury options also include Lamb & Mint, Liver, Onion & Bacon, Chicken & Leek, Mediterranean Vegetables and Spinach, Cherry Tomato & Mozzarella. Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce is a guaranteed desert favourite, while Woodland Fruits is another all-season sweet variety.

Quality ingredients are a theme across the range, such as real ale, premium beef, smoked ham, and either beef or vegetarian suet according to variety, helping to give consistent taste performance, serving after serving.

Glendale is now stepping up production in line with strong repeat sales into the UK foodservice sector and is additionally looking at small steak puddings for the chip shop trade and chilled sweet and savoury varieties for the retail sector.

Capitalising upon its successful marketing of frozen sausages to the Spanish Costas catering trade, the company will also explore export sales opportunities, with the Great British Pudding Company brand sure to appeal to holidaymakers and expats hungry for traditional food favourites.

The Great British Pudding Company single variety cases (8 x 370g, 12 x 250g, 12 x 150/190g) are available now from national frozen foods supplier Central Foods, or direct from Glendale Foods, Cobden Street, Pendleton, Salford M6 6LX, telephone 0161 736 8652, email sales@glendalefoods.com
