Pierhead Purchasing launches Cubanero Cerveza

The 'Imported Beer People', Pierhead Purchasing, is adding to its portfolio of speciality beers with a brewed-at-source Cuban lager: Cubanero Fuerte.

With the growing popularity of Cuba as a holiday destination many travellers will already know the classic Cuban lager ‘Bucanero’ which is brewed at the Bucanero Cevezeria in Holguin.

Pierhead Purchasing had planned to launch this original, local lager in the UK, however problems with copyright meant that the name had to be changed for the British market.

The product has therefore been given the title ‘Cubanero’ for its distribution in the UK. And while the beer may have a different name it is still the same, authentic Bucanero lager inside the bottle that locals and holidaymakers know and love.

Cuba is already regarded as the home of rum, which is made using sugar cane. However the country also has an impressive crop of speciality beers that are created using locally grown ingredients.

Cubanero is made with a unique blend of malted barley, hops and Cuban sugar cane, which all help to give the drink its distinctive taste.

The Bucanero Cervezeria is located in the lush, Eastern region of Holguin in Cuba. It is here that Christopher Columbus is said to have first started out on his discovery of the Americas, exclaiming that: “This is the most beautiful place human eyes have ever seen.”

Cubanero offers excellent on-shelf standout, with its distinctive branding, which features a pirate, seafaring imagery and the 100% Cubano mark on the bottle’s neck.

This ties in with the region’s colourful relationship with pirates, as the Caribbean was one of the areas most troubled by piracy in the 17th Century.

Brewed to 5.4% ABV Cubanero Fuerte is an aromatic, full-bodied lager, with a gentle sparkle. Flavoursome and full of malt notes, the lager pours as a golden, straw colour with a light head.

Pierhead’s Director of Imported Beer, Michael Cook, commented: “Cubanero is one of the only Cuban beers available in the UK and offers a unique drinking experience.

"As Southern and Central American brands are flourishing, authentic beers from the Caribbean, like Cubanero Fuerte, have the character and quality to enjoy similar growth.”

Cubanero is available from Pierhead in 330ml bottles at very competitive prices and delivered through a nation-wide delivery service including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, as well as exporting to other EU countries.

Pierhead’s extensive range of international brands already includes Jenlain Six from France, Coopers Sparkling Ale from Australia, Moosehead from Canada, Quilmes from Argentina, Mexicali from Mexico, Weltenburger Kloster from Germany, Alhambra from Spain and New Orleans beer, Dixie.

a fine beer and better than cristal...to have bucanero in the uk is a dream come true. . . to drink it is to remind me of my honey moon and that cool refreshment on a hot cuba day...which i can now do on a cold scottish night
