Working party to advise on RRP
ECR (UK) has established a new working party to evaluate and advise on environmental best practice in relation to the industry's use of Retail Ready Packaging (RRP). As awareness of environmental issues grows across the food industry, the new group will research and explore the impact of RRP. "RRP already delivers benefits to the consumer, supplier, and retailer. But we need to ensure that these benefits are delivered in a format that reduces environmental impact. The core objective of the group is to seamlessly integrate environmental thinking into the overall ECR UK Retail Packaging strategy, and to share best practice across the industry, says Brian Gibbs, sub-group co-chair, and Asda RRP Manager. The environmental sub-group plans to issue a project scope and objectives by mid-June, and is planning to publish an output document by late 2007. This document will focus on Environmental best practice and will be used in conjunction with previously issued ECR UK guidelines on Retail Ready Packaging. Progress updates will be obtainable by logging onto the ECR UK web-site at www.igd.com/ecr/rrp, adds Gibbs. The sub-group is part of the wider ECR (UK) Retail Packaging workgroup, with members drawn from suppliers, packaging manufacturers and grocery retailers.
