Baylis Logistics: Weetabix distribution deal

Previously, the Kettering based company handled this operation in-house with its own rigid fleet.

Weetabix produces three billion Weetabix breakfast biscuits every year from its Kettering site - that's nine million per day and almost 6,250 every minute. It is owned by Lion Capital, a Private Equity Fund.

As well as the healthy whole-wheat biscuit cereal, the company produces a range of major breakfast brands including Alpen muesli, Crunchy Bran, Ready Break and Weetaflakes and most recently the very successful brand of Oatibix and Oatiflakes.

Baylis Logistics has been appointed to manage stock collection, order booking and radial distribution via its shared user network to the independent and wholesale outlets. Over 10,000 deliveries are made a year with two million cases handled.

The 24-hour operation is run from the Baylis Leighton Buzzard site and includes EDI (electronic data interchange) capture, online tracking and POD (proof of delivery).

Speaking about the appointment of Baylis, Kelvin Gingell, distribution manager at Weetabix, said: “As the leading cereal brand in the UK it is key to our continued success that we have a reliable and cost effective supply chain.

“We outsourced our operation to Baylis Logistics as it has an established infrastructure and understands the demanding nature of the independent and wholesale requirements for accurate deliveries.

“The company provides a high quality service that meets all our criteria and we are delighted to be working in partnership to develop a robust logistics service.”

As a Weetabix employee I have to say I am disappointed - to list a news item on Google News that is over eighteen months old is not what we expect from a news channel. This item has caused considerable distress to employees in the company who believed that this was news, and that there were further changes to our distribution system that no - one seemed to know about. Baylis may be very proud to have the business, Weetabix may be very happy with their service - but surely this was news when it happened, not old history.
