Unidex appointed to handle D&G soft drinks

Source : Unidex/Splash London

Caribbean Flavours has announced the appointment of Unidex UK Ltd (a subsidiary of the Dutch based Unidex BV), as the exclusive distributor of the full range of Desnoe & Geddes soft drink brands in the UK's wholesale, cash & carry and independent trade.

The D&G range of products, owned by Caribbean Flavours consists of Old Jamaica Ginger Beer (brand leader in the UK), the D&G canned soda range (including Grape, Pineapple, Strawberry and Cream Soda, now extended with two new flavours - Fruit Punch & Kola Champion) and Ting (Jamaica's most popular grapefruit drink).

The remit of Unidex UK Ltd is to focus on the ethnic and independent trade and in addition to further extend its relationship with its major Cash & Carry and Wholesale customers. Plans involve the deployment of full time merchandising resources to service the Independents on whom it is planned to make direct calls.

Old Jamaica Ginger Beer is the jewel in the D&G crown. A £15 million brand, it is the leader in the ginger beer market in the UK, with a share approaching 25%. Moreover, Old Jamaica has grown by 15% over the past 18 months in a sector with slow growth. Newly designed packaging has been introduced in 2007 to re-invigorate the existing range of packs and stimulate increased interest from its core user group. Simultaneously, the distribution of the Light Ginger Beer variant (which has been re-formulated to remove Aspartame and replace it with the sweetener, Sucralose) has been extended, thereby introducing the brand to a younger and more health conscious audience.

The media budget for 2007 will more than double the spend of 2006, when the successful 'Unofficial Beer' campaign, during the World Cup, helped generate an increase in volume of over 50% in the period that the press activity was running. The main promotional activities for 2007 will be linked to the England/West Indies Test series and One Day Internationals, with TV commercials appearing on Channel Five's evening highlights programme and Sky Sports' live coverage. This is the first time that the brand has been promoted on television. Colour advertisements will also run in The Times and The Daily Telegraph to ensure a heavyweight presence.

'2007 promises to be an exciting year for D&G' claimed Roland Janssen C.E.O. of Unidex BV. 'We have dynamic plans in place, in line with the enormous potential of this brand and the new opportunities that exist with the re-designed packs and the range extension.'
