Internet grocer success comes with a warning

It would seem that the internet is finally setting the pace when it comes to shopping for groceries.

Firstly this week, a report from MyVoucherCodes said sales for groceries over the internet have overtaken any other type of product.

And now Experian, on its Footfall Index, has said that despite an overall fall in retail sales via the web, supermarkets are seeing more success.

But one thing the major retailers have to keep in mind is an element of community when delving into the online business.

It is vitally important that they use the technology to stay ahead of the game and offer food and non-food goods quickly.

Yet for some it is just as important that they can get a personal service, where they are served by a human and not a machine. Things can get incredibly faceless if the emphasis shifts to online without a care for physical stores.

One thing the internet cannot do is provide personal customer service, with actual human interaction. Local values must be maintained. And as we all know, the internet can go wrong.

A good balance between the two must be achieved.
