Tesco calls commission's number over cheap alcohol sales
The Competition Commission's release of a report showing that the big four supermarkets had sold £112.7m of cut price beer, wine and spirits during last year's World Cup raised a few eyebrows at Tesco HQ. Tesco, the report found, was the worst offender, apparently flogging £43.2m worth of beer and £48.7m worth of wines and spirits below cost. Not so, said the super keen rebuttal squad at Tesco on the blower to Talking Retail. No, the Commission had mistakenly taken figures for Tesco covering an 18-month period, rather than for the five weeks of the World Cup. It makes a difference, you know.
