Bomfords collapse turns up the heat
Big retailers can expect to come under further pressure over their treatment of suppliers as the row over the collapse of fresh produce group Bamfords rumbles on. Although the firm went into administration at the end of last month, the story seems to be gathering a momentum of its own. Bomfords supplied many of the big multiple retailers, including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. Today's article in the Guardian spins the story thus: The miracle of cheap food depends on illegality and links the demise of Bomfords to the raid by the Gangmasters Licensing Authorityon some of the agencies used by the company back in March. An article in the Times earlier this month took the same angle: Firm in gangmaster scandal goes bust And even a few bloggers have been weighing in with their views, a prime example being "Postman Patel" Looks like we might be seeing higher prices for home-grown fresh produce in the near future
